Daniel Craig is great in all of his Bond movies, but this one might ask the most out of him. Not only is Craig's second Bond film one of the few direct sequels in the franchise, you could basically just cut the two films together as one massive epic spy tragedy, and you wouldn't be missing any information.īond's rage doesn't fade as the movie goes on, either. White ( Jesper Christensen) in the leg, and Quantum picks up moments later following 007 leaving the scene with White captured in the trunk of his car. With a standalone 007 adventure, this might not work so well, but given Quantum's place in the franchise, a revenge thriller is honestly perfect.Ĭasino Royale ends on a major downbeat note with Vesper Lynd ( Eva Green) betraying Bond and drowning soon after, leaving him angry and desperate for answers. Forster tried to use his limitations to craft a 70s-esque revenge thriller, a Bond film that would be heavy on the action and light on the story. Daniel Craig even had to help out with the writing process because of the team's inability to hire a writer to help fix up the script. Some say the script for Quantum was turned in two hours before the strike began, others say that the film went into production without a finished script, but either way, the filmmakers were not happy with the film's script as they were gearing up for shooting. This short gap of time was exciting for fans, but difficult for the filmmakers, particularly because of the writers' strike. It's one of the few modern examples of a quick turnaround between Bond movies, coming only two years after Casino Royale's 2006 release. Quantum of Solace was directed by Marc Forsterand released in November 2008.

While these biases might be hindering, you can distinguish between true joking and abusive “joking” by paying attention to how the joke is received: In some societies, individuals are seen as less-than because of their gender, background or financial status. Most of the time, thick-skinned people who grew up believing that humiliation was the equivalent of humor are still hurt by those types of remarks even if they are better at deflecting or hiding the shame they feel as a result.įor others, they may have long-held cultural beliefs, such as the belief that some individuals are better than others, and therefore it’s okay to make fun of the “lesser” people. And while some individuals from that type of home may be less sensitive to abusive “joking,” make no mistake: they are not immune to its effects. They may sit around the dinner table, picking away at other people’s insecurities to produce a laugh. To understand the difference between regular joking and abusive “joking,” it is crucial to first understand the societal systems that might make some people confuse the two, or believe they are one and the same.įor one, some families make humiliation a sport. To make an entertaining joke that everyone can enjoy requires more creativity than sarcasm and put-downs. Real, intelligent, humor is not at the expense of another person this type of banter takes the easy, cheap-shot, road. We put the word joking in quotes when discussing it in the abusive context because words that deliberately hurt others are not truly jokes. “Joking” is a tactic commonly used by abusers. The tried and true excuse for bullies everywhere.” – Eileen Cook, from The Hanging Girl There is a fabulous quote by author Eileen Cook which describes this specific type of joking well: Sarah knowingly took advantage of Jack’s vulnerabilities and then tried to cover it up by calling it all a joke. It minimizes the desires and feelings of the other person. It’s not merely picking away at a personal point of annoyance. Her continual joking at his expense becomes deliberate verbal abuse. He also has repeatedly expressed to her that these kinds of comments upset him. The casual observer doesn’t know Jack battles with social anxiety so they might not be sensitive to how harmful the situation is and might actually join Sarah in her mocking.Īs his spouse, Sarah is intimately aware of Jack’s deep vulnerability in these settings. This simply adds to Jack’s sense of shame. It might make others feel uncomfortable and sorry for Jack because Sarah is mocking her husband’s attire in public. On the outside, to some people, Sarah’s “joke” might seem light-hearted at best. If these types of exchanges aren’t harmful enough when done in private, imagine how someone feels when the same situation plays out in front of friends and family. We’ll see if our friends are impressed by your outfit.” Don’t blame me when you’re the one who can’t take a joke! Come on – it’s time to go. “Geez, can’t you tell it was just a joke? Lighten up, Dapper Dan!” Sarah says, obviously annoyed at him for speaking up, but still laughing at her “joke.” She slaps him on the shoulder. I’m already uncomfortable about going and now I get to spend the whole night feeling self-conscious. You always make comments like this right before we go out. “Sarah, we’ve talked about this before, and you know it bothers me. “Are you telling me it’s not appropriate? Should I wear something different?” he said feeling paranoid. “I just think it’s funny you think that suit is appropriate for a wedding.” “No,” said Sarah as she put her shoes on while making a face that made it seem she wanted to say yes. “Is there something wrong with my outfit?” Social events like this made him anxious. He was already stressed about going to the wedding with the group who’d be there. Jack looked down at his suit, now embarrassed. “Is that what you’re going to wear to the wedding?” said Sarah to her husband Jack. We are hoping that as the story unfolds you will begin to understand when “joking” is a form of covert emotional abuse. In this story, “joking” causes great harm. Have you ever wondered when a “good” joke crosses the line? Have you ever been on the receiving end of a “joke” that felt more like a punch in the gut? Have you ever felt that people are overly sensitive to the jokes that you say? In today’s blog, we share a story about a couple, Jack and Sarah. HIGH Bringing maxed-out missile launchers to bear on the enemy. Join me on this grand endeavor. The Slow-moving Runaway Choo-choo Train of Deadly Death Many of these games aren’t great, and the PlayStation 3 is long past its time in the limelight for stronger choices. I got my PlayStation 3 back in January 2013 and have since been downloading just about every game offered up to me monthly thanks to the service’s subscription, but let’s be honest. At least this one has both a purpose and an end goal–to rid myself of my digital collection of PlayStation Plus “freebies” as I look to discontinue the service soon. Oh look, another reoccurring feature for Grinding Down. I liked this more than I thought I would, but not enough to keep going. There’s other modes, like Baghdad Mayhem and Tokyo Raid, that are grayed out on the start screen, and I’ll never experience local co-op, but that’s okay. I played the first three levels of Anomaly: Warzone Earth‘s campaign, stopping at mission 4 “Distress Call,” and that’s enough for me. That said, the story is fairly ho-hum, with the voice acting not doing it any favors. The UI is clean and stylish, with the map screen sporting a beautiful mix of blues, whites, and reds, and the tutorial never really felt like a tutorial, pushing you through the first mission quickly while teaching you things along the way, such as how to heal units or purchase new tanks. You direct all the movement, the moment-to-moment action, and collect power-ups dropped on the battlefield from planes overhead. I like the look of Anomaly: Warzone Earth a lot, and the top-down perspective really makes you feel like a god, commanding these soldier-esque ants to do your bidding. I enjoyed the rethinking “on the fly” part, as well as running ahead of my units and gathering power-ups, seeing what enemies and traps are in store. Anomaly: Warzone Earth takes this idea one step further by giving you control over what you can build, the order in which you place your units–they move in a singular line–and by also allowing you to plot out the course you’ll take dynamically during the mission, switching routes when necessary or a better path opens up. However, I’m continue to remain not hooked.īasically, you control a bunch of mobile units in an environment brimming with enemy turrets, making your way to a specific point on the map. Or, if you are feeling silly, tower offense. Well, Anomaly: Warzone Earth is kind of like a reverse tower defense. I only played Defense Grid: The Awakening long enough to get some specific Achievements back when I was trying to hit a certain amount and then uninstalled the game without any further thought. Zombies–but generally I’m not hooked on the gameplay. It’s not to say I hate it to the point that I won’t play anything in it, as I have enjoyed a few–namely Kingdom Rush and Plants vs. Y’all should already know at this point that tower defense is not a favorite genre of mine. See, the anomalies–which, if you didn’t know, are something that deviates from what is standard, normal, or expected–are interfering with radar and satellite imagery and must be dealt with to neutralize any potential threats. Anyways, you take on the role of the commander of an armor battalion, referred to as “14th Platoon,” and are sent to investigate anomalies that have occurred in the vicinity of these wreckages and gather information on what is happening in the affected areas. Y’know, not all that much different from our current climate. Anomaly: Warzone Earth is set in the year 2018, where sections of an alien spacecraft have crash-landed in several major cities around the world, including Baghdad and Tokyo, and doom is beyond impending. So what about the other games? As well as the classics everyone remembers, such as the recently remastered Spyro franchise, there were many more games which everyone played but most people have forgotten. These include The Elder Scrolls, Grand Theft Auto, and Warcraft franchises as well as the Mario Kart and Mario Party series. Many popular gaming franchises also began in the ’90s and are still running now. The end of the decade also saw the beginnings of online gaming support with online capabilities becoming standard on newer consoles. 13 Call Of Duty World War 2 After Call of Duty: World at War, the franchise took a long break from the setting before returning to it in 2017 with Call of Duty World War 2. Rainbow Six Siege is mostly about competitive multiplayer, so it doesnt have a single player campaign, any meaningful storylines, or stuff do alone. These consoles included the Sega Genesis and later the Dreamcast, Nintendo’s Gameboy and N64 and the Sony PlayStation. It also marked the period in which arcade games began to decline in popularity as home consoles became more common and more affordable. The introduction of discs instead of cartridges also meant games became much bigger and more detailed. It was the time in which games made the leap from sprite-based graphics to full 3D graphics. If you do choose the slideshow function, there are several transitions you can apply such as Zoom In and Zoom Out, light effects and some rotation options. The useful bit is that this can all be performed in "batch" processing mode so you can process, resize and label as many images as you want at once. After resizing however, the program does allow you to rotate photos, add text to them and even make a slideshow in movie format. This makes it very limited on the one hand but also extremely quick on the other. All you have to is drag and drop your photos into the application window (as many as you want), change the size and click "Start" - there's not much too it beyond that. Now, there is nothing wrong with any of that by default, but let’s not pretend you aren’t already imagining some of the cringiest writing you’ve ever seen in your life. You have a anthropomorphized and queer cast of high schoolers who want to make angsty art while having to confront deep themes. As in: “The meteor that killed the dinosaurs is coming, and this is the last year.” Now that’s a slugger of pitch, in my opinion, and a hell of a lot more interesting than most visual novels.īut, oh boy, I wouldn’t blame you if it also raised some red flags. Let’s get something out of the way: the premise for the game is that you play as Fang, an anthropomorphic dinosaur musician whose last year of high school is also the last year. Let’s start with the very simplest of improvements that Goodbye Volcano High brings to the table: it’s writing. Good Writing Improves a Narrative? Who Would’ve Thought! Even if it doesn’t, it is doing enough special that other narrative-focused games should take notice. Visual novels, seemingly, needed a pioneer, and Goodbye Volcano High looks to be it, if it maintains the level of quality it has in its opening section. It’s that good.Īnd not just “good” as in “well-written,” but good as a game, done in such a unique way so as to serve as a template (and, perhaps, as a standard) for visual novels going forward. Not only is it such a great experience (at least from the half-hour or so that I played) for me to considering it one of the rare exceptions to my usual distaste for visual novels, but it is also such a breath of fresh air that it gives me hope for the entire medium. In short, I’d long since abandoned visual novels as a method of storytelling and as a style of game, content to only return to it for exceptional cases.Īnd then I came across Goodbye Volcano High at PAX East. Even though, in both cases, I wished for something a bit, well, more. And even while I’ve enjoyed both of those, they were flawed exceptions for me games that still carried the baggage of all visual novels, but just happened to be well-written and special enough to prove that at least something could work. It’s a downright bleak method of storytelling, in my opinion, made barely tolerable by the relative bright spots of games within the medium like Doki Doki Literature Club or the Phoenix Wright series. This opinion is not improved by the majority of them being a… let’s say lurid romantic fantasy where the “choices” - the only style of engagement for most visual novels - boil down to which character you most want to romance. Suffice to say, I do not have a high opinion of visual novels. Typically, they have stock anime-style art, a generous conception of what “choice” means, and hackneyed writing that is so self-indulgent that you could psychoanalyze it in order to figure out in what ways the writer’s parents failed them. They are a medium that lacks the specificity of a novel proper, while also lacking the interactivity of a video game. |
